Howdy all! Hope everyone had a great first month in 2024 😊

January recap

So, we planned to hit the ground running (and if we could manage it, sprinting) this year and we kinda did. Our ‘Warrior in a garden’ rashie, the second in our rashguard collection arrived way ahead of schedule from our supplier. Unfortunately though, once we QAed (Quality Assured) the pieces, we decided the production just wasn’t up to scratch for us. Since deciding that in early January, we’ve been back and forth with the supplier to rectify the issues and we finally got the outcome we wanted - they’re being re-made with all issues being addressed before sending them to us.

Although that’s an awesome win for us, the downside is the long awaited release of the ‘Warrior in a garden’ rashie is going to be even more long awaited as we approach Chinese New Year and our supplier may or may not send our stock out before they shut down for a few weeks. We’re hoping to have the updated and up to scratch rashie in our hands by mid to late Feb (edit: They arrived in early Feb and went on pre-sale to Kazoku Newsletter subscribers on 6 Feb)  so we’ll keep you posted on our socials. As always, for first dibs on the limited size run we’ve produced, subscribe to our newsletter and keep an eye out for the Kakuto Kazuko pre-sale link a few days before they go on sale to the general public.

Otherwise, January was a great month for us. We kept planning effectively the rest of 2024’s projects with room to add more when the creative spark hits us. We also finalised our new Kakuto Finger Tape sponsored athletes - more on them to come but the first athlete we ever sponsored - Tye Collier, 2023 #1 ranked AFBJJ Adult Male Gi Purple belt competitor, has graciously re-signed with us. Tye will be the first athlete we complete an athlete profile on and he will also be contributing to some blog pieces this year with his insights, so keep a look out for those in the coming months.

Kakuto Studios

Alex has been mighty busy in the studio this month, doing initial sketches for our next rashguard after ‘Warrior in a garden’. We’ve also been talking through some concept ideas for the packaging of this next piece and it’s safe to say, I’m making sure this next packaging design is going to be the best we’ve ever produced.

The HANYA & PEONIES SKATEBOARD DECK 1/1 has sold and is now mounted on the walls of MST clinic in Ravenhall. The second board SAMURAI DUEL SKATEBOARD DECK 1/1  is still available for purchase so don’t be shy, get yourself a handdrawn board literally no one else will have since it’s one-of-one.

The next skateboard design is already in motion and it’s actually a recreation of a board that had a lot of interest when it was first published on the @kakutostudios IG account back in July 2023. The Fudo Skateboard Deck will be amended in design and redrawn onto a new board (the first board had ink leeching due to the protective spray). As always, this will be a one-of-one handdrawn board created by Alex and will be available for purchase when completed near the end of February.

Besides the art component, we’ve expanded Kakuto Studios beyond art and further into the creative space with Marketing Services covering Brand, Social Media and Acquisition/Retention Marketing strategies and programs. I (Jaz) will be looking after this service where I’ll first be creating a program of work focused on helping martial arts clubs with manageable and creative social media planning, as well as general marketing services to implement into the core of their business models. I’m currently working with our first client and am excited to create tools for the martial arts space to expand their brands, businesses and get more people than ever involved in martial arts across Australia.

New Kakuto Brands

If you read our January 2024 update, I teased two new Kakuto brands being dropped this year. Even though we’ve made strides in the right direction to get these brands up and running, they’re not completely ready to be spoken about just yet. But rest assured, the first brand to drop is gonna be dope, no one else seems to be doing much if anything in this space and it’s gonna add something to the grappling community which has been missing for some time now.

What's next...

Even though it’s a short month made slightly longer with a leap year, so much will be happening in February. We have plans to re-jig the packaging design of our Kakuto Finger Tape to make it sexier than ever. Creative projects will keep trucking along and new art pieces will be dropped which you didn’t even know you needed - but trust me, once you see them, you’ll want ‘em.

For now that’s all guys and gals, catch ya on our socials and until next time homies ✌🏼
