INSPIRATION

If you haven’t already seen the anime series Dan Da Dan (Netflix), you should. Besides being pretty hilarious, the artboards, character designs and visuals are insanely good. This design was inspired by the 3-meter tall alien Sumo (itself inspired by the Flatwoods Monster) from episode 2, along with the legendary Sumo Enhō Yūya.

Enhō Yūya (Akira) highlights are our guilty pleasure and once you see him in action, you’ll understand why. Being significantly undersized in both height and weight compared to his counterparts, he proves technique can win over size and strength any day.

SYMBOLISM

This Sumo wrestler is adorned with the shimenawa (sacred rope), representing purification. Attached are Shide (Zig Zag strips), another staple of Shinto rituals also signifying purity. The prestigious Yokozuno (highest rank Sumo) wear this attire when conducting the dohyō-iri (ring-entering ceremony) while performing the Shinto ritual of purifying and cleansing the dohyō (ring) before the tournament begins.

During this ritual, Yokozuno are not just seen as elite athletes, but as a living embodiment of a deity.
